*Blue Flag Beach Certification is awarded once a year to those beaches that are deemed to be safe, clean, environmentally sound, and have adequate facilities and services for tourists. As such, one can expect properly maintained ablution facilities, professionally trained lifeguards, clean water, clean beaches, and safe parking.

In 2006, the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism awarded Blue Flag status to 20 beaches in South Africa, eight of which are in KZN.
